      Company: Near Earth Autonomy

      Company site: https://nearearth.aero/

Position(s): Computer Vision Engineer, C++ Embedded Software Engineer, others that are more arcane

Location: ONSITE - Pittsburgh, PA USA

Description: Write software for autonomous aircraft, mostly delivery drones and helicopters. Fly without pilots, find places to land on their own, handle mission planning with an operator. We don’t build the aircraft, but do build the control system hardware. Not AI crap; these things have to be able to be sold to airlines, so we need to use algorithms we can certify for safety. Some military clients, but we don’t make weapons, we make logistics and transportation stuff.

Tech stack: ROS2, C++, Linux, OpenCV, whatever else works.

Compensation: Salary is middle-end, but it’s not in California or Boston so cost of living is better than average. Benefits are not outstanding but are solid. PTO is 22 days a year, everyone in the company gets the same vacation time. Equity is present, but the CEO has been remarkably resistant to selling out to evil VC people so it’s more of a “someday” thing. Other benefits… it’s a small company full of people who mostly don’t suck. You might get to ride in a helicopter if you want. If you can ride in a helicopter and work on a laptop without getting motion sick then someone will find excuses for you to have the opportunity.

Contact: Apply on the company website or message me with questions. I can give you a referral if I think you deserve it.

      1. 13

Truly appreciate the candid descriptions :D

        1. 1

Would the company be interested in a web developer to rewrite your website in something that isn’t Wix? The linked website looks nice enough but it’s slow, has a massive blank space to the right of the page, and text just cuts off on narrow displays…

          1. 2

Ahahahaha I wish. It seems to work fine on Firefox on Linux and Android, but it’s far more about bling than content and always has been. You wanna tell people what the company actually does, you give them the youtube channel. I’d personally love it if someone would, say, send an a proposal for a new website to the “General Application” application on the careers page, but that’s not something I get to make actual decisions about.

          Company: AdaCore

          Company site: https://www.adacore.com/

          Position(s):

Location: Depends on the position. Most permanent positions can be remote, the internships will have to be in-office. We have offices in New-York, Bristol, Paris, Vannes, Grenoble, Toulouse, Dresden and Tallinn.

Description: At the beginning, AdaCore was the company behind GNAT, GCC’s Ada front-end. We’ve built a whole ecosystem (formal proof tooling, static analyzers, fuzzers, coverage tools, build tools, IDEs…) for the Ada language and are now aiming to become the “one-stop shop” of the embedded safety-critical world.

Tech stack: See the corresponding positions. There is of course a lot of Ada, but also a lot of non-Ada things: the GCC stuff is obviously C++, the static analysis stuff is Ocaml, the Rust stuff is Rust. All of our testing/build infrastructure is in Python. Knowing Ada isn’t a requirement - we can offer training if the position requires it.

Compensation: “Industry standard”, whatever that means. I’ve been told our US colleagues have the same benefits as the ones enforced by the law in Europe (extremely good health insurance, lots of vacation days etc.)

Contact: Please go through the website.

Tech stack: 100% web-scale FOSS, much Python, cf. https://docs.softwareheritage.org/devel/architecture/overview.html

Compensation: Currently we are hosted by Inria, the french National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology, where the salary range for this kind of positions is 30 to 70 k€ gross yearly, depending on qualification and experience. Includes bonus holidays and 70 days remote/year.

                      Company: FreeRADIUS / InkBridge Networks

                      Company site: http://inkbridge.io

                      Position(s): QA, IT

Location: REMOTE / ONSITE - Ottawa, ON, CA

Description: We build bespoke systems for ISPs and Telcos world-wide. Server applications (RADIUS, DHCP, DNS, TACACS+) + databases. Multi-site, fail-over, replication, etc. Think “the fun part of IT”. Designing and building the systems. The day-to-day work of keeping the system running is handled by the customer.

We need IT people to help build customer systems. We need QA people to automate our tests, and write more tests. We already have hundreds of tests, but more is always useful. We need C programmers who are want to work on a product which is used by pretty much everyone in the world.

We have people in Canada, US, France, and the UK. We’re a good team, and work well together. We’re looking for detail-oriented, self-motivated people.

If doing complex IT work is fun, we’re a great fit. There’s no “death march for version X”. Instead, there’s just an ongoing series of small customer projects. Finish one, and move on to the next. It’s about solving interesting problems.

If you want to get into the details of fundamental network protocols, we’re a great fit. The “soon to be released” v4 of FreeRADIUS does RADIUS, DNS, DHCPv4, DHCPv6, TACACS+, and a bunch of others. All at the same time. We have customers for every bit of the stack, too.

Tech stack: C, Python, Saltstack, shell scripts.

Compensation: Normal for CA. :( We can’t do San Jose salaries. If you’re in CA, salary / vacation / etc. are standard for IT in Canada. If you’re remote, you’re more than likely a contractor, and vacation is up to you.

Sounds interesting! The “How we operate” section says “Hard working […] We wrote this job post during the weekend”. I wonder how serious is this? Are people expected to work on weekends overtime or that just means you are free to work any day any time, and some people do?

                          1. 2

In my short experience in the company, there’s no “strict” control of hours but instead of results, so if I need to finish something before a demo it’s in my expectations to work during possible time to reach that goal.

Vacation and other benefits are currently being re-evaluated because we’re growing the team (we’re only 9 people right now, so things were a bit ad-hoc). These benefits will be competitive/generous with respect to the market, though.
